An Untimely Departure
Posted April 30th, 2008 by ColinI was recently (yesterday) dismissed from my job as a result of continual budget trimming. The following is a letter I emailed to the staff earlier today, a somewhat bittersweet goodbye of sorts.
As you may or may not have heard already, I’ve been asked to stop coming into work any more, effective as of last night. It’s been great working with most of you, and I will sincerely miss the time we spent together. As I’m sure many of you are well aware of the ongoing cut-backs and money saving schemes that have consistently been handed down over the past few months as the store slowly spirals down the drain, I just thought I’d take this less than fortuitous opportunity to pass along some advice to those of you who still remain in employ. This is a sign of what’s to come, and based on what I’ve seen and heard in that time, it would appear that very few people’s jobs are really secure. This might be a good time to consider proactive movement rather than simply waiting for the axe to fall. And so begat the second exodus.Colin Blank

The second exodus is a reference to an incident that took place at my former work almost two years ago when a poor decision by the owner to hire a new general manager alienated a large portion of the staff and cause a lot of employees to seek work at some of our more successful competitors. This time around things are happening a bit slower, but the number of people leaving is pretty close.
